Topic: The Obesity Epidemic
Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates,Research shows that the number of Brazilians suffering from obesity is growing. "Obesity among women had stabilized in previous studies, and now there is an expressive increase," says Deborah Malta, the study's coordinator. "That is very worrying." Some 13% of Brazilian adults are obese — 12.4% of men and 13.6% of women — according to the study, which was carried out last year among 54,000 people for Brazil's Health Ministry. Brazil has took not too much actions to respond to the obesity epidemic: in 1999, a federal nutrition program was created to help provide healthier foods to schools, and legislation was passed in 2001 to regulate nutritional food content and the labeling of canned goods.2 In 2003, the Programa Saúde na Escola was created to provide schools with agricultural foods. Still, local governments have largely been left to respond on their own.3 In recent years, no new federal programs have been authorized to help the states respond to the growing obesity levels. America has a new plan to respond to the obesity problem: All the MacDonald are going to list calorie information on menus and on drive-throughs, as soon as the end of this year. And so do many other states have required calorie-confessions on menus for some time now. Brazil thinks this is a good idea so the citizens will know how much calorie they will get from the food if they eat it. Then they will consider eating it or not. Brazil wants the increase of obesity can be controlled so the citizens can have good healthy conditions.
Topic: Pollution and Development
Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates, pollution, especially industry pollution is an extremely serious problem in some developing countries. Brazil is one of them. Cuba tao, all industrial town of 85000 people in Brazil,is an example of the connection between industrial development and pollution. In 1954,Cuba tao had no industry. Today it has more than twenty large factories, which produce many pollutants. The people of the town are exposed to a large number of poisonous substances in their environment, and the consequences of this exposure can be clearly seen. Birth defects are extremely common. Among children and adults, lung problems are sometimes twelve times more common in Cuba tao than in other places. Brazil, like many other countries, has laws against pollution. but these laws are not enforced strictly enough. It is cheaper for companies to ignore the laws and pay the fines than to buy the expensive equipment that will reduce the pollution. It is clear, therefore that economic growth is more important to the government than to the health of the workers. Also many multinational corporations are doing the work that can not do or will be harmful to the environment in their own countries in Brazil. In order to find the balance between development and environment protection, Brazil Launches First Fuel Cell Bus in Latin America, the hydrogen reacts with oxygen to produce electricity and water. This kind of tech has benefits both for economic developing and environmental protecting. The pollution problem is also serious in America and China. In order to solve the problem of energy shortages while not sacrificing people's living environment, the world's largest wind power project, the Guangting plant will be launched recently in Beijing and city residents may start using green wind-generated electricity within two years. Brazil thinks using recyclable sources as energy is a good idea and this idea has the feasibility. So Brazil would like to stop the pollution caused by developing and strongly supporting the Green Economy.
