Topic: The Obesity Epidemic
Honorable Chair and Follow Delegates,
Russia has been highly affected by the obesity epidemic. With almost 50% of Russia's population being overweight and around 15% obese, it is easy to say it is a wide spread problem. Russia wants to create an anti-smoking law to help cut down on overeating. Russia is being to initiate more solutions and would like to get obesity levels down to a more acceptable level.
Topic: Pollution
Honorable Chair and Follow Delegates,
Pollution is Russia is a major problem. Russia suffers from water pollution, air pollution, and nuclear pollution. 75% of surface water and 50% of all water in Russia is now polluted. This has caused health issues in many cities as well as in the countryside, because only 8% of waste water is fully treated before being returned to waterways. Ineffective water treatment plants and a lack of funding, have caused heavy pollution, and has also resulted in waterborne disease spread, such as an outbreak of spread by the Moskva River in 1995. Industrial and chemical waste is often dumped into waterways, including hydrogen sulfide, which has been linked to the large-scale death of fish in the Black and Caspian seas. Regulations and restrictions on waste removal have help to cut down on these problems, however they still pose a major threat. Russia's air is among some of the most polluted in the world. Overall, more than 200 cities in Russia exceed the healthy amount of air pollution, some 10 times more, and this number is increasing as more cars appear on the roads. Russian laws and regulations have helped it improve since the 1990's. Another big problem is nuclear waste. Russia currently has 31 nuclear power plants in operation. However, several of these plants have been used to long. Instead of decommissioning the plants Russia continues to use them. This causes the threat of accidents to rise. Due to lack of funding, occasionally Russia has used unsafe dumping methods of nuclear waste. Such as, until 1993 nuclear waste was dumped into the Sea of Japan. Russia would like to improve their dumping methods to official regulations, however this would cost an estimated 26 billion USD.
