Topic: The development and pollution
Honorable chair and fellow delegates, it is widely known now that Ukraine's environmental problems include the nuclear contamination resulted from the 1986 Chernobyl accident. One-tenth of Ukraine's land area was affected by the radiation.
Pollution from other sources also poses a threat to the environment. Ukraine releases polluted water, heavy metals, organic compounds, and oil-related pollutants. The water supply in some areas of the country contains toxic industrial chemicals up to 10 times the concentration considered to be within safety limits. Air pollution is also a significant environmental problem in the Ukraine.
Environmental policy in Ukraine springs from several provisions of the Constitution of Ukraine. They are:
• right to ensure ecological safety in Ukraine,
• right of citizens to healthy and safe environment, and
• right to free access to information regarding the environment .
Ukraine likes the action that EU countries and central and eastern European countries take.
Ukraine wants to prevent pollution from increasing instead of solving the problem that has already occurred .
Topic: The Obesity
Honorable chair and fellow delegates,
The percentage of overweight Ukrainians is at 53% of the population and the percentage of Ukrainians who meet the definition of obese is 20%. Statistics show that Ukrainians continue to gain weight.
Ukraine hasn't taken big action to solve obesity so far.
But France, a member of France took actions. In September 2005, France passed a law banning soda-and-snack-selling vending machines from public schools and misleading television and print food advertising.France also put in place 1.5% tax on the advertising budgets of food companies that did not encourage healthy eating.
There are more important issues waiting for Ukraine to solve, so taking actions to solve obesity is not in our country's future plan.
