Egypt Position Statement
Topic: Development and Pollutions
Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates, major environmental issues in Egypt are air pollution, water pollution noise pollution, soil pollution. According to EPA, this causes a serious risk of developing serious respiratory disease and cancer. Our country has been addressing government agencies to solve environmental issues. Egypt is also collaborating with the national and international development partners, on defining environmental policies, setting priorities and implementing initiatives with a context of sustainable development. But we don’t think these pollutions are result from global environmental phenomena, instead, are caused by our citizens. Other countries also signed treaties to restrict each other’s use of non-renewable energy, setting standards and environmental action programs.
Egypt is now focusing on the reduction of pollution and the conservation of Egypt’s natural resources through effective environmental management. Egypt is looking for environmental experts and by using new technologies to help reduce the impact.
Topic: The Obesity Epidemic
Honorable Chair and Fellow Delegates, obesity rate continues to rise from the beginning in the 1990s. The cultural appreciation of heavier female bodies is a factor. The increasing consumption of oils, fat, and sugars is another factor. Overweight leads to early osteoporosis in women in the future, possibility to have cancer, endocrine dyspraxia and cardiovascular disease.
Egypt produced a Demographic and Health Survey in 2008, covering topics from family planning to maternal health care to
nutrition. Egypt is aware of the risks of obesity, but wants to learn more about the rising trend of obesity in the future and address future policy. Egypt promotes people to have a healthy life style and eating habit. Other countries have formed health programs and organizations and summer camps for people who want to be more balanced.
