Act II
Requiem (The Funeral Scene)
Write two responses, one covering the questions the last scene in Act II and the other covering the Requiem.
Act II
- Why does Biff want to leave Willy alone and never come back? What does he think he's doing for Willy?
- Why does Willy think Biff is leaving? Why does Willy think Biff was never successful in life?
- Why does Biff believe he was never successful in his life? What epiphany does Biff have about his life? What does he need from Willy?
- Does Willy seem to understand what Biff is trying to say to him? After Biff leaves, what does Willy believe has happened? What does this lead him to do?
Requiem (The Funeral Scene)
- What is most tragic about Willy's funeral?
- Charley explains that "A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Why does a salesman have to dream? How is being a salesman different than putting "a bolt to a nut, [telling] you the law or [giving] you medicine?"
- Do you agree with Biff that Willy Loman "had the wrong dreams" and that he was "a man who didn't know who he was," or do you agree with Charley?
